Weather-related catastrophes like floods, snowstorms, hurricanes, and windstorms have caused the number of power outages to increase. No part of the country is safe from such disastrous events. Moreover, infrastructural problems and higher demands have increased the instances and duration of blackouts, causing more people to think about alternative power solutions. A portable power generator is the best solution for dealing with temporary power outages.

There are two main types of portable generators: single-fuel or dual-fuel. Inverter generators are also categorized as portable generators. A dual-fuel portable generator runs the same way as a single-fuel generator but gives you the freedom to run your unit on two different fuel types: gasoline and propane. It eliminates dependability on one fuel type, which comes in handy when you can’t find gasoline due to shortages or infrastructural issues.

This time, we have shortlisted some of the best dual-fuel portable machines from the best brands. In this article, we have decided to review the DuroMax XP5250EH dual-fuel portable generator as the best mid-range generator. It hits the sweet spot of having one generator for multiple tasks. It can run your essentials at home, power tools at a worksite, run your RV, provide the necessary power for camping, and outdoors.

What Is a Dual-Fuel Generator, and How Does It Work?

A dual-fuel generator is just like a simple gasoline generator, but it can be run on two fuels: gasoline and propane.

The unit comes with a fuel selection knob that users operate to select fuel. You will need to connect a propane cylinder to the machine instead of pouring gasoline while running the machine on the propane.

The power output and runtime vary on both fuels. We will check this out in detail in the review section shortly.

A Brief Introduction to the DuroMax Brand

DuroMax is one of the most famous and highly valued generator brands in North America. It is currently the market leader in the dual-fuel portable generator industry. DuroMax was founded in 2003 and is headquartered in Ontario, California.

DuroMax also runs a separate generator brand, DuroStar, which is best for budget buyers. DuroMax generators offer top-of-the-line features such as remote start, digital control panels, high-end safety features, rugged wheel kits, and durable parts.

DuroMax’s vision is focused on quality, reliability, and durability combined with outstanding customer service. DuroMax describes the XP5250EH as a durable unit that packs a powerful punch when you need it the most. It is perfect for running household essentials, tools at job sites, and RVs.

Here we have a rundown of all the features present in the machine. We will discuss how each feature impacts the machine’s usability so that you know how to use the machine in a better way and get the most out of it.

    Power Output and Usability

DuroMax XP5250EH is a powerful unit. It delivers 5250 peak and 4200 running watts on gasoline. The power output on propane is 5000 peak watts and 4000 rated watts. The peak amps at 120V on gasoline are 43.75, and running amps are 35.00. On propane, the peak amps are 41.67, and running amps are 33.33.

Running wattage is the standard output that a generator delivers to power your appliances. Peak or starting wattage is the maximum power a machine can produce. The difference in both power outputs is the machine’s ability to accommodate appliances with motors and compressors. Such appliances, for example, ACs, fridges, and compressors need more power to start but less to run.

The difference in output is because gasoline has a higher burn rating than propane. However, it burns louder and is not as eco-friendly as propane.

You can use this machine to power various things in your home, worksite, and outdoor gatherings and functions. For example, it is perfect for running a coffee maker, toaster, iron, clothes dryer, and security system.

For emergency backup, you can use this machine to power a well pump, a 10,000 BTU AC, sump pump, space heater, refrigerator/freezer, and many other appliances that don’t have a power requirement above the unit’s maximum output.

DuroMax XP5250EH can power a leaf blower, pressure washer, outdoor lighting, hedge trimmer, lawnmower, and many other such appliances. It cannot power large tools like a welder but can comfortably run a sander, table & circular saw, compressor, hand drill, nail gun, and router.

The trick for getting the most out of your machine is to start appliances one by one and turn off the ones you don’t need anymore.  You must keep the load below 50% to get maximum runtime from your generator.

The THD rating for XP5250EH is 10-12% under load. It is best for running routine appliances but not recommended for running sensitive appliances like laptops, LED, gaming consoles, chargers, and medical equipment.

    Gas Tank Capacity and Runtime

The second most important feature you need to consider is the gas tank size and runtime. As the XP5250EH is a dual-fuel machine, we will discuss runtime on both fuels.

The gas tank capacity is 4 gallons. It is an industry-standard for generators in this category. A full gas tank can run for 8 hours at 50% load. A 20 pounds propane tank can run for 7 hours on a 50% load.

Let us explain this to you. Suppose the load applied on your generator is 2100 watts and running on gasoline, you will get a runtime of 7-9 hours. Similarly, if the unit is on propane and the load applied is the same, the machine will run for 6-8 hours without any hiccups. The runtime decreases as the load increases and vice versa.

Please note that the runtime may differ in certain conditions. For example, it depends on the condition of the generator, the age of appliances, the quality of wires and fuel, and how well you have maintained your unit.

It is pertinent to highlight that when you buy a dual-fuel generator with a power output below 4000 watts, the runtime is higher on propane.

    Engine Specifications

DuroMax XP5250EH is built around a 224cc 4-cycle air-cooled spark-ignition engine. The engine is simply the best in its class and is made with heavy-duty, durable materials. It is a powerhouse that provides plenty of power to handle multiple jobs and appliances at one time.

The engine can be started manually and electrically. DuroMax supplies an oil funnel, but the oil is not included in the original purchase for first-time use. The recommended oil type is 10W-30. Refer to the user manual to know how much engine oil you must put in the machine.

    Control Panel and Outlets

Let’s discuss the generator part with which you will interact most, the control panel. The control panel is a combination of contemporary and traditional designs. It features a propane inlet, an engine start/stop button (electric start), and a multi-meter that displays the machine’s voltage, hertz, and running hours. In addition, it helps keep the users aware of maintenance intervals and when they need to change the engine oil.

The outlets are somewhat limited on this machine. You get two 120V household outlets and one 120V 30A RV-ready outlet. The control panel also includes breakers.

    Noise Level

XP5250EH runs at 69 dBA. The generator is not too loud and not too quiet. A 69 dBA noise level sounds like a noisy restaurant setting. If you place the generator 15 feet away from your windows, doors, or work area, you will hardly get to hear the machine, and it won’t bother you much. However, loudness is a relative term. For some people, 69 dBA may be too loud.

    Dimensions and Weight

The generator measures 25 x 22 x 22 inches and weighs 129 pounds. Its dimensions and weight are in line with other generators in this category.

    Portability

XP5250EH comes with a wheel kit. The never-flat wheels are big and durable. The kit also features a single handle, ergonomic rubber grip that you can use to drag the machine around.

Please note that a dual-fuel generator is a slightly less portable than a single-fuel generator. In addition, you must carry two fuels with you if you plan to use both fuels while running the machine outdoors.

    Warranty and Certifications

All DuroMax generators have a 3-year residential and 1-year commercial warranty for defects in electrical and mechanical components. DuroMax explicitly states that freight charges incurred for warranty claims are the sole responsibility of the buyers. The warranty is non-transferable and is valid to the original purchaser.

The warranty is not valid when the fault is normal wear and tear of a part, installation or maintenance related, cosmetic defects, acts of God or natural disasters, and problems related to using non-DuroMax parts.

It is an EPA-approved and CARB-certified machine that can be used, sold, and purchased in all 50 states. Such certifications guarantee that the emission levels of this generator are lower than the limits set by the relevant government agencies.

    Value-Added Features

    • RV-Ready 30A Outlet: The 30A RV-ready outlet lets users plug the unit directly into your RV with an adapter.
    • Spark Arrest: It protects your generator from power surges. This feature comes in handy when your machine is running, and the utility power comes back with higher voltage.
    • Low-Oil Shutoff: The unit will not start and will automatically shut off when the engine oil is below the minimum level. It protects the moving parts in the engine from wear and tear and enhances the generator’s life.
    • Included Components: You get an oil funnel, spark plug wrench, toolset, wheel and handle kit, a propane regulator, and owner’s manual along with the generator.

    Price

DuroMax generators are slightly more costly than other generators in the market. However, they are good value for money because of the advanced features, extended runtime, easy maintenance, and maximum portability.

    User Reviews for the XP5250EH

Most of the reviews for XP5250EH are positive. Buyers like the machine because it is easy to set up, comes with everything other than oil to get started, and is shipped in perfect condition.

Most people use this machine for emergency backup and outdoor power. However, a couple of buyers also mention that they use it in their RVs for powering RV AC/heating systems and many other appliances.

The common complaints are the machine’s inability to run 220-volt appliances. Unfortunately, the XP5250EH doesn’t offer dual-power MX2 technology.

Overall, it is a great machine and does what it is supposed to do.

    FAQs

Are DuroMax dual-fuel generators any good?

Yes. DuroMax is currently the market leader in dual-fuel generator technology. It is the first brand to introduce mass-scale dual-fuel generators in the US. All dual-fuel generators from DuroMax have excellent ratings.

What can the DuroMax XP5250EH run?

DuroMax XP5250EH can run a coffee maker, washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, garage door, toaster, iron, well pump, sump pump, refrigerator/freezer, and water heater in your home. In addition, it can run a leaf blower, pressure washer, hedge trimmer, lawnmower, and chainsaw outdoors. You can also use it to power a table saw, compressor (1HP), circular saw, nail gun, and many more appliances.

How many hours can a DuroMax dual-fuel generator last?

A DuroMax dual-fuel generator can last for 1000-2000 hours. It means that if you run your generator for an average of 100 hours in 1 year, a well-maintained machine can last for at least 10 years.

Which fuel is best for the XP5250EH?

Both fuel types (propane and gasoline) work well in the XP5250EH. However, if you are looking for some extra power and runtime, it is best to use gasoline. The standard practice adopted by many people is to use gasoline as routine and use stored propane during emergencies because propane has an unlimited shelf life.
