History
DeWalt has a deep appreciation of history, and they have a solid footing in the tool industry. We’ll take you through this history to show you where the company started, its early years, its breakthroughs, and how it looks today.
Founding and Milestones
DeWalt was founded back in 1923 by Raymond E. DeWalt, who was the inventor of the radial arm saw. He worked hard to provide quality tools for his customers. The original plant and offices for DeWalt Products Company were located in Leola, Pennsylvania, but after a few short years, the company was moved to a more modernized plan building in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1929. In 1941, the company began rapidly expanding its production to help out the war efforts, and then in 1949, the company was acquired by American Machine Foundry (AMF).
In 1953, it extended its operations into Canada creating a whole new subsidiary, and over the next couple of years, it extended its manufacturing space to be able to keep up with the demand of its customers. By 1955, to keep up with customer demand, the company had to add 40,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing space.
In 1992, it introduced the world’s first line of portable electric power tools and accessories that were designed specifically for professional woodworkers and other types of contractors. Then, it decided to kickstart a revolutionary system of 30 different new cordless tools that were meant to make life easier and more efficient for the customers using them.
In 2000, the company purchased Emglo Compressor Company and Momentum Laser, Inc, and by 2001, it was responsible for manufacturing over 800 accessories and 200 distinct electric power tools. In 2005, after doing extensive research with professional contractors, it developed SHOCKS – Active Vibration Control that allowed its products to produce less vibration while being used.
In 2012, the company launched its Perform and Protect line of products that were designed to provide one or more of the following: dust containment, low vibration, and control. This line of products did this without sacrificing the performance that the brand has become known for. Then in 2013, the company announced its Made in the USA initiative at STAFDA 2013.
In 2013, it also announced that it was forming a three-year partnership with the Wounded Warrior Project, which was designed to assist veterans who had been injured in the line of duty, and they announced that they were handing a new manufacturing facility in Charlotte, North Carolina to provide an expansion of the existing distribution center it already had in the area.
2015 was a huge expansion year for the company. Not only did it build seven new manufacturing facilities for its products, but it also introduced Tool-Connect, which was an app that would allow users to track their tools from anywhere in real-time. It was in 2016 that the company launched the world’s first battery, FLEXVOLT, that would automatically charge voltage whenever the user would change tools. This assisted in providing a longer runtime for the job site and increased power.
In 2017, it introduced its Breakaway Reciprocating Saw Blades, which won the prestigious Power Tool Innovation Award for its innovative design that made it, unlike any other saw blade, on the market.
In 2017, the company also announced its new upcoming digital solutions that still fall under its guaranteed tough products policy. Then in 2018, the 100th anniversary of the Product Service Division of Stanley Black & Decker was announced. It also announced that its products were now available in over 64 centers across the United States and sold at over 830 authorized service centers. They also moved to online ordering and tracking, which would allow its customers to do so 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, without having to depend on store times and the availability of products within the stores.
