Why Choose Generac?
Generac has been in business for more than 60 years, and it is the No. 1 manufacturer of home backup generators in the United States. The company makes the widest variety of generators of any power company, and it is an industry-leading designer and maker of transfer switches and backup power accessories.
History
Generac was founded by Robert Kern in 1959. From the beginning, the company has been based in Wisconsin. Let’s look at some of Generac’s key milestones.
Founding and Milestones
Shortly after its founding, Generac started to make generators for Sears. These generators were portable, and they were made using the Craftsman brand. In the 1970s, Generac began making more portable products, and the company also expanded its line of products for recreational vehicles.
In the early 1980s, the company’s first backup power generators for industrial and commercial uses were introduced. In the last half of the 1980s, Generac was producing generators for home, commercial and industrial use. In 1989, it introduced the first gas-powered automatic home standby generator.
In 1998, the company’s portable product division was sold to a private equity firm. After the expiration of a non-compete contract, Generac began making portable generators again in 2008. Later that year, Aaron Jagdfeld was appointed as Generac’s new CEO, and he remains the CEO to this day.
In 2009, Generac Industrial Power was introduced. This was a rebranding of the company’s industrial products division. With the rebranding, Generac introduced ergonomic and aesthetic changes to its industrial generators, and new engines and enclosures were added to its industrial models. In addition, Generac began a partnership with Fiat. As part of this partnership, Fiat supplied Generac with diesel-powered engines for use in its industrial generators.
Milwaukee Magazine chose Generac as one of the best places to work in the southeastern area of Wisconsin. In 2010, the company’s Power Design Pro (a sizing application for industries) was selected as the silver winner for the Product of the Year Award from Plant Engineering. In 2014, Frost & Sullivan chose Generac as the recipient of the Natural Gas Generator Company of the Year Award. This award was given in recognition of Generac’s contributions to North America’s natural gas generator industry.
Along with several of the company’s portable generators, Generac’s Guardian home standby generators have been honored with the Good Housekeeping Seal.
Production and Manufacturing
Products
Generac makes generators for homes and businesses, and its home generators are some of its most popular products. The company makes backup generators, and it also manufactures portable and mobile generators. Generac is the top-selling brand in America for backup generators for the home. While generators are its primary products, you can count on Generac for high-quality transfer switches, pressure washers, heaters, pumps and light towers as well. Generac generators and other Generac products are made in the U.S.
Manufacturing
Generac has its headquarters in Waukesha, WI. Its engineering, sales, marketing, IT, customer service and finance departments are located at the headquarters. In addition, Generac has seven offices in the United States. The company is committed to sustainability and environmental protection, and many of its generators incorporate solar power. Generac recently launched a hybrid device that includes a battery storage system that’s combined with a natural gas generator. If the sun isn’t shining and solar energy can’t be used, the natural gas generator will be used to charge the product’s battery.
Key Facts
Many of Generac’s generators use natural gas, the cleanest fuel source that’s readily available around the world. Generac is dedicated to reducing greenhouse emissions, and the company believes that natural gas is an important transition fuel. As part of its daily operations, Generac has instituted a “Drive to Zero” campaign that aims to reduce the waste, energy, water and emissions that are involved in the company’s manufacturing process. The company is certified annually for its compliance with ISO 14001 (standards that measure and improve a company’s environmental impact).
Warranty Information
As with most of its other products, Generac’s generators come with five-year limited warranties. In some cases, an extended warranty may be available for purchase. Typically, transfer switches come with two-year warranties. Limited warranties cover defects in workmanship and materials. Accidental damage is not covered under these types of warranties.
If you notice a defect with your generator or other Generac product, you should contact Generac’s customer service team as soon as possible. Generac will arrange for your product to be repaired or replaced within 30 days. If possible, you should keep all of the original receipts when you purchase your Generac power system or other Generac product. However, even if you lose the receipt, you’re still entitled to have your Generac unit repaired or replaced if it’s under warranty.
