Blackouts and power outages can’t be prevented. We can, however, be prepared for them by having an alternate energy supply, such as a portable generator, that can sustain all our home appliances when we do have them.

DuroMax generators are a good fit for the job. With inbuilt dual technology and powerful gasoline-powered engines, they can illuminate your house during a ‘dark time’.

DuroMax XP4000S 4000-Watt Gas Portable Generator

Google’s Rating 4.6

Engine and power output

This excelling product by DuroMax is equipped with DuroMax 208cc OHV, a mighty powerful gasoline-powered engine that includes the 4-Cycle Air-Cooled Spark Ignition technology. With a speed of 3600 RPM, this portable practical generator is capable of handling heavy loads and supporting many electrical devices at once, like refrigerators, computers, house lights, or even your home air conditioner, microwave ovens, and electrical heaters.

This is also a great choice for the homeowner that has a garage-basement type of workshop for furniture building and repair, as this power generator can run power tools or garden appliances (drills, hammer drills, lawnmowers, electric saws), etc. for a good amount of work hours. This model comes in blue color.

Tank Capacity and Runtime

This powerful generator has a runtime of 12 hours with 1/2 load of gasoline. It has a somewhat big fuel tank with a capacity of 3.96 gallons. Let’s remember the included tank in this unit is for gasoline only.

If you want to run it on propane, you’d need to connect it to an external tank.

The DuroMax XP4000S is equipped with a 7.0 horsepower valved engine that needs a recoil start. It can constantly produce 3,300 Watts and has a surprising peak of 4000 Watts. It can run your home’s appliances with no problems. If the tank is full, it can power your devices for 8 more hours. As a side note, customers have pointed out that running this generator on propane won’t be as highly efficient as it is when fueled by gasoline. Either way, the DuroMax XP4000S is dual technology-quality tested.

Dimensions, Weight, and Portability

This compact yet powerful sturdy device measures 17.5 x 18 x 18 inches weighing 90 pounds (40 kilos). It is mainly made of metal and its windings are made of solid copper. It is equipped with side handles, strong rubber wheels, and an individual fold-in handle. Both items will need proper installation. A single person can install the wheels and the extra handle and drag along the device once it’s properly built.

Outlets

This generator uses 120 Volts to operate, and it can be switched from 120 to 240 V mode depending on the needed power surge. (120 Volts only if you want to enjoy its full electrical power).

It is equipped with a power panel in which you can find a very practical selection of available outlets that will come in handy to connect your tools or appliances. It includes two 120V household common outlets for plugging kitchen or office appliances, and one 120V 30A twist lock outlet that offers you extra security by maintaining in place your (rounded) connection in case you have to run appliances that can’t afford energy intermittence in them, such as pool pumps, medical equipment among other industrial power tools.

Safety and Noise Level

Every generator produced by DuroMax complies with Emission Standards, which is the governing rule for approved limits on the emission of toxic vapors, fumes, or any kind of pollutant that can be expelled by a manufactured commercial product that is being sold to the public.

There are standardized limits on the emission of specific gaseous fumes or vapors for power generators. In this case, we can note that the DuroMax4000S generator is as environmentally friendly as possible as it has been approved both by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and CARB (California Air Resources Board). As for its noise level, this model has been rated with 69dB of noise, which means it falls into the standard noise level for generators, not very loud, not very quiet. Let’s remember this is a powerful generator capable of sustaining many appliances at once, some engine sound must be generated whilst the unit is at work.

Other Features

This DuroMax generator is equipped with an automatic shut-off feature that detects when the oil levels are low. It also includes a voltmeter to measure voltage used and an AC circuit breaker, which is a safety measure that protects your generator from internal damage by turning off the power when an overload is detected. Pretty smart device, don’t you think?

A Brief Introduction to the DuroMax Brand

DuroPower, an American-based company headquartered in California, is a power tool and engine manufacturer that has been active since 2003. DuroMax is a subdivision of the brand that during the last decade, has been scaling positions as one of the best seller companies in the category of digital inverters and power generators. Not only is DuroMax known by the RV enthusiast that is interested in getting a portable generator for their recreational vehicle, but also, this well-recognizable brand stands out in the market for manufacturing home appliances of great quality such as pressure washers, engines, pumps, and other accessories.

DuroMax
If you’re looking for a new generator, this comprehensive analysis of DuroMax’s history, products, reviews, and more can help you make an informed decision.

What Is the Difference Between a Portable Power Generator and a Full House Generator?

Portable generators are compact, smaller machines that are fuel-powered and can be dragged along your patio to be connected to your indoor house appliances or your RV. They include common outlets and voltmeters on their panels. Usually, portable generators can produce between 3000-4000 Watts (depending on their size), whereas big house-building generators produce between 20,000-24,000 Watts.

Compact generators are cost-effective as their prices fluctuate between $200 to $800 dollars approximately, whilst big power generators can cost between $3000-$5000.

DuroMax’s portable generators are a great option for families in the US that live in areas prone to frequent natural disasters and power failures. Additionally, we’ve seen an increase in the number of persons having to work from home due to the pandemic. Having an extra power supply for home appliances and home office gadgets becomes a more attractive option for these individuals as well.

Portable power generators have great design advantages:
  • Dual Fuel Technology. New generation generators may be equipped with the Dual Fuel feature, which means that a portable generator can work both with gasoline (conventional use, recoil force required) or it can be propane-fueled.

Let’s keep in mind, however, that a power generator nonetheless is, and will always be, a dangerous device that can cause accidents if not handled properly. Let’s not forget power generators, unless stated by the company, cannot be operated in closed, reduced, or unventilated spaces due to the toxic fumes it expels when the engine ‘burns’ the fuel to produce electrical energy.

Propane fueling your generator will require a proper cord (often not included in the package) that will be connected to the propane inlet and an external mini gas tank that will feed it externally. Never pour any other fuel/substance into your generator’s fuel tank.
  • Portability and Transportation. Portable power generators used to be bulky, square, not-so-friendly machines. Modern portable generators/models feature many new advantages for their customers, as all of them are ergonomically designed for you to drag them along by their handles as they come with strong rubber wheels. It’s easy to oil them and fill their fuel tanks. Portable power generators are easy to operate and can be delivered to your doorstep if ordered online.

Transporting a compact generator between houses is an easy task, as most portable generators in the market aren’t wider than 25 inches and weigh between 100-150 pounds, making them a suitable passenger for your sedan car, van, or truck.

FAQs

How much does the DuroMax XP4000S cost and where can I buy it? What does the box include?

The current cost for this generator can be found on the manufacturer’s website and the Amazon online store. This is a device that can be shipped directly to your house.

The delivery box includes the power generator, its instructions manual, a very convenient plastic oil funnel, a wheel kit, An optional extra handle, a spark-plug wrench, and a toolset (screwdriver + spanners), and of course, the warranty information. In case you find that any of these items are missing from your delivery, or you receive a dented, incomplete unit, make sure you immediately call the store where you purchased the generator from.

What kind of oil or fuel does this generator need to properly work?

This generator needs 10w30 oil for a proper start. This is a multigrade type of engine oil that is ideal for high-duty engines as it can endure hot temperatures without overheating the device’s engine.

To produce electricity for your home or RV, this generator will need you to fill (at least 50%) its fuel tank with gasoline, or you can use the converter hose to connect it to a portable propane tank to get the generator going. If you run your generator mostly on propane gas, make sure you clean the fuel tank properly from time to time and ditch any old gasoline that it may store, as gasoline degrades and ‘goes bad’ after being stored for three to six months without being consumed.

Expired gasoline can seriously damage your device.
You’d probably wonder why that does not happen with your car? It does, however, cars are usually in constant movement, but the same principle can be applied to them. Never leave stalled gasoline in a vehicle’s fuel tank or a generator’s tank for more than 3 months without use.

My generator is not starting, what can I do?

If you have been using your generator for long periods, it may be smart to check its oil levels and filter (in case the filter needs replacement) and see if the lack of oil is what is preventing the generator from starting, as the DuroMax XP4000S is equipped with an automatic ‘shut off’ feature that won’t let it run it if the oil levels are low.

Also, check for overloading of the device by using its voltmeter. If your engine is too hot and still doesn’t want to work properly or if the device is new and you can’t manage to start it, make sure you contact DuroMax customer support. Do not open the generator yourself to avoid injury. Do not replace parts that are still under warranty.

What is the warranty DuroMax offers for this portable power generator?

DuroMax generators have a 30-day full product replacement warranty (if defective or damaged, previously used, broken seals) and 1 year for parts replacement. However, keep in mind the damaged part’s shipping cost is the responsibility of the customer.

Can I use my generator inside the house?

No. Even if your generator complies with the Emission Standards, gasoline, and propane-fueled generators expel toxic fumes through their gauge/exhausts that are poisonous if inhaled by humans Generators should be operated in open environments and should not be left in the reach of children or pets. For indoor generators, you can look up solar-paneled dual generators.

Is DuroMaxXP4000S a cost-effective recommendable product? How long will it last?

Power generators usually have a lifespan of 10-15 years depending on their yearly use. Some portable generators are just used in case of blackouts, power outages, ‘storm seasons’ therefore their life can be extended for a further 15 years.

If your generator is in constant daily use (RV) it may last less than 10 years of use. Generators, even portable ones, are sturdy, resistant machines that can endure a few repairs and pieces replacement. Properly cleaning your unit, checking it for oil levels, and getting new parts can extend its useful life.

Is it cost-effective?

Yes, it is. A well-manufactured device like this one will ‘repay’ its own cost by making you save up money in the long run. It does this by protecting/running your home appliances, preventing you from losing work hours, or sparing you from throwing away wasted food that could not be refrigerated due to a power failure.
