Westinghouse Electric Corporation

Why Choose Westinghouse Electric Corporation

Westinghouse’s promise to its customers is the reputation it has forged throughout its many years in business. The bedrock of its foundation, in the company’s own words, is one of great dependability thanks to long years of experience in manufacturing. Westinghouse combines this reliant nature with innovative new technologies to help make modern life easier for you.

History

To get to know Westinghouse, we’ll take you through the company’s founding, early years, breakthroughs, and how it looks today.

Founding and Milestones

With a history stretching back through the previous century, the company began in 1886 as the Westinghouse Electric Corporation. Founded by George Westinghouse, one of its primary original purposes was as a manufacturer that produced devices that were meant to run on alternating currents. Although Westinghouse faced heavy opposition from opponents who felt this current was far more dangerous than the popularized direct current of the time, the company managed to succeed in its efforts. This initial victory led to Westinghouse branching out into any and all building of electrical-based products. Thanks to these widespread efforts, the company became a primary competitor of the same electric company owned by inventor Thomas Edison. Once Westinghouse Electric reached this milestone, it produced switch gears, motors, and turbines designed to facilitate the generation and transmission of electricity throughout various machines.

After World War II, Westinghouse diverted some of its more conventional efforts into making nuclear reactors for both commercial and military use, producing some of the equipment that would be used on submarines of the day. Forays into similar equipment such as radars for aircraft soon followed. These trends in the company’s production kept up for decades, but Westinghouse was keen to expand once again in the 1990s. During this time, the corporation branched out into broadcasting efforts by CBS in 1995 and Infinity Broadcasting the following year. These efforts created yet another memorable note in the company’s history by merging two of the biggest radio broadcasters of the time under the same umbrella.

Once Westinghouse had garnered successes in this arena, the corporation made yet another huge change by selling its remaining assets in the manufacturing industry to focus efforts solely on broadcasting and the like. These new avenues included both television and radio programming of the day. Westinghouse later morphed into CBS Corporation in 1997. However, its legacy as a pioneer in electrical usage and manufacturing remains strong to this day.

Production and Manufacturing

Products

Westinghouse is still producing goods that use electrical power to bring convenience, comfort, and utility into the modern age. Some of the most recent products include both gaming monitors and smart televisions. However, it is worth noting that the corporation was a leader in producing both the first 1080p display television and the first 4K television with “Fire TV” smart capabilities as well. Westinghouse has also branched out into the production of portable tablet devices. In addition to general electronics, Westinghouse as a whole produces home goods, cookware, lighting, power tools, and HVAC systems. Different product lines are manufactured or put together in different regions of the globe. Westinghouse makes or ships products from North America, Africa, Australia, China, and Europe, just to name a few of the big regions in which the corporation has a notable presence.

Manufacturing

The innovations Westinghouse has produced over the decades are quite widespread, and the processes for manufacturing their goods can be as varied as the types of products the company offers. Westinghouse has plants all over the world, but it maintains a corporate headquarters in Pennsylvania. This headquarters can field customer queries or issues from any of Westinghouse’s many categories of available products. In terms of processes the company uses in its manufacturing, Westinghouse strives to make the most efficient and dependable items within each subcategory of technology it offers. Part of the company’s vision is to “produce technology that transforms the human experience.”

Key Facts

Historically, Westinghouse is known for developing and producing the world’s first known industrial-grade air conditioning unit. Further, the company was granted an estimated 28,000 patents throughout the 20th century, placing it third worldwide for holding the most patents at a given time in that era. More recently, the company’s energy branch has increased its efforts to bring safe, sustainable power to the world. Merging its roots with modern technological advancements, Westinghouse plays a key role in striking a balance between nuclear, solar, and wind energy. The corporation’s goal is to use both solar and wind energy when available, with nuclear power providing a reliable alternative for commercial needs. Although the original Westinghouse merged with and branched solely into broadcasting, Westinghouse Nuclear is an offshoot that continues the company’s roots in energy to this day.

The electronics branch of the company still produces lighting, power, and appliances that are meant to serve both work and entertainment needs.

Warranty Information

Westinghouse stands behind its electronics, and the company gives a personal guarantee against any defects. Possible defects could be related either to materials or workmanship, and the warranty is good for a period of one year from the date of purchase. Within the limits of the warranty, Westinghouse guarantees to repair any known defect or, failing that, replace the product for the consumer. In some cases, Westinghouse may choose to rebuild the product. For the purposes of the warranty, a “rebuilt” good is one that the corporation has restored to its original capabilities at the time of its manufacture.

Further, replaced products will retain their own warranties for a period of either 90 days from their repair or the remainder of the initial warranty for the original item. Certain exclusions to the warranty can apply if the product is missing its original serial number or if it has been altered through misuse or personal repair that would not be covered under the agreement.

Customers may be asked to send in the current defective items for the company to examine. The brand’s next steps may depend on the type of damage the item has and how it came about, and Westinghouse asks that customers please remember to provide some proof of the original purchase.
